a bun revelation

Have you had an AHA! moment recently? I did last night and I can't be more smiley today because of successfully pulling together a simple, effortless bun in less than a minute using only two things versus a thousand bobby pins. My thick hair is kept long and layered so keeping it down or in a ponytail have been my only go-to options for a quick morning. I've always admired girly, messy buns because it can instantly glamourize any look, sloppy or sleek. Yet my thick hair and layers never made it possible for me to wear this style. I would look like an asian teenybopper with all my ends popping out of the "bun" and have a sun-like radius of hair around my head. Otherwise I'd have to spend an hour to pin each end down on my head and it was just too high maintenance for me. And I've tried bun products of all kinds, especially the spiral pins from Goody. Those really only work for thin hair too. I was not having a good hair day yesterday so I put it up in a ponytail and that didn't make it any better. I was going to do a bun and I had a thousand bobby pins laid out on the table until I spotted my thick hairband I usually wear only for face washing. I said what the hell and used it like an elastic to secure the bun I twisted with my hands and voila! It magically held down all of my loose ends and secured the circular twist of my bun without the use of any bobby pins, clips, or hairspray. It was an amazing discovery for me, although maybe I'm just an easily excitable person. Who knew this [not so] little hairband would be so functional ^_^

  11. So funny you posted about your hair in a bun, haha in response to your comment, Sora's hair reminds me a lot like mine after I sleep with my hair in a high bun on top of my head, actually! You should try it! I really recommend Philip B's Maui Wowie Beach Mist too for tousled waves, stuff works (and smells) like magic :)

By the way I really have to find that hairband, I have the same problem!

  14. I have incredibly thick hair and dong a bun is like a real chore because I hate the pieces that stick out! I just started using a donut (kind of like a bun sock) to make my buns. Yours looks great!

    now following you!

  15. Super chic!! I love the bun, but somehow it ends up falling down limp-ily..I guess I have a lot of hair and need tons of pins or hair spray to keep it together..LOL! Yours look very mod!

  17. I'm going to have to try this trick out. Just like you, I've got thick, layered hair and have exhausted the use of bobby pins, hairspray and those dreaded goody twisty things and none work.
