candied orange peel

I'm starting to get back into cooking mode. I always found it to be a great stress reliever. Time spent in the kitchen is peaceful, methodical, and your fabulous work results are instant. I've been diving into the candy and sweets realm recently so this is my next recipe: candied orange peel.

1. Peel a navel orange. I used a knife to cut and peel these strips off the orange. Then cut the slices into pieces 1/4 inches wide.

2. Throw the peels into a pot of water and bring it to a boil. Once it's at boiling point, drain the water. Pour cool or room temperature water over the peels and bring to a boil again. This process is called blanching, which is used to soften the vegetable or fruit. Repeat blanching process 3 times.

3. Remove the peels from the pot. Now mix 1 1/2 cup water with 4 1/2 cups of sugar. Gently whisk it while it is over medium heat to dissolve all of the sugar. Add the peels and bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer for 45 minutes. The peels will then soften and become translucent.

5. Drain what is now orange syrup into a jar to save. It'll be amazing for tea! Remove the peels and roll it in sugar as much as you please. Let it dry for about a couple of hours.

Enjoy as candy or chop to sprinkle over ice cream, desserts, pancakes, anything! It's such an easy recipe and a delectable candy to give as gifts to your friends when you wrap it in pretty paper. You can do the same recipe with lemon peels.

  7. Just remember to use an organic orange otherwise you're going to eat all the garbage that they pour on orange skins: fetilizers, food dies, etc...
    And you don't want those!

    1. Yes I did use organic because I am a little wary of the pesticides and stuff. I thoroughly washed the peels and it is boiled.

  8. This looks great. I've never seen homemade candied orange peel. In fact I don't know if I've ever even eaten it. It is a very useful thing to do with peel that you would otherwise throw away. Isn't it still bitter though?

    1. It's definitely not bitter! The 45 minutes of simmering infuses the peels with the sugar. Plus it's more sweet when you roll it around in more sugar! It tastes like orange sour patch but without the sour...orange gummies haha
