The essentials of a well-lived day.

—————

The last two weeks became a conscious, extended holiday for me to focus on the "me I want" for 2017. I didn't vacation, or travel, or binge on Netflix - I spent most of my mornings reading the history of tea, afternoons discovering art in so many forms on Instagram and Pinterest, evenings testing my vegan recipe imagination, and late nights cozying next to my husband and cat. It was my way of resetting my vision and going into the year with a glowing flicker of promise in an uncharted realm.

Writing is my oldest passion, but the only form of creative inclination that I took a chance upon. I gave up on visual arts young when my stick figures could never be straight and it was regarded useless to translate a scene in my head onto paper. And yet, I wasn't exposed until my formative last few years to the immense imagination and ingenuity in the expansive vision of fluid color, mismatched textures, unprecedented mediums -- the likes of Carmen Herrera and Cai Guo-Qiang. I'm late to the game, but this is the reason why 2017 is already so important to me: I'm confident that artistry is present at everyone's fingertips, but the key is to fervently discover it. Age, culture, and lifestyle should never be a hindrance to self-discovery, only an enrichment.

I've picked up a few pens, brushes, and a devout intention to try, practice, and play.

With my newest intentions, I've decided to sweep my environment of intricacies and distraction to start each morning with a calm, clear aura. The biggest clutter of my life is my closet (surprise, surprise). When I choose my outfit each day, I grumble at the crowds of clothing I know I won't wear today, or tomorrow, or in five months. Until a certain number of grumbles are had is when I forcibly take action upon myself to purge, purge, purge. I rid 20+ items to consignment and dedicated a few bags to Salvation Army.

It's OK to buy new things, but with every new purchase you can find a better home for that something old.  As a blogger, I've gotten accustomed to always having the newest with every season - multiples of floral dresses, boyfriend jeans, and pointy heels overpower our home and it's time to readjust to the singular. It's also OK to have just three or two staple white shirts to wear with every combination when something is so timeless. A detail adds uniqueness and flair that will never feel old. Minimizing accessories down to a daily combination of a delicate bracelet and an antiqued watch will add to an identity of effortless finesse. And treating yourself to a contemporary bag each season will keep the aesthetic fresh and well-invested, as well  as picking up a new hobby or two.
